Heiligman, D. (2017). VINCENT AND THEO: THE VAN GOGH BROTHERS (FIRST EDITION.) Godwin Books / Henry Holt and Company.

Plot Summary:

The deep and enduring friendship between Vincent and Theo Van Gogh shaped both brothers' lives. Confidant, champion, sympathizer, friend―Theo supported Vincent as he struggled to find his path in life. They shared everything, swapping stories of lovers and friends, successes and disappointments, dreams and ambitions. Meticulously researched, drawing on the 658 letters Vincent wrote to Theo during his lifetime, Deborah Heiligman weaves a tale of two lives intertwined and the extraordinary love of the Van Gogh brothers.

Critical Analysis:

Heiligman writes this book in the form of letters exchanged between two brothers. The author does a great job of distinguishing between each of the brothers’ letters. He uses his creativity to use the chapter headings as galleries, making readers feel as if they are walking through an art museum.  Heiligman shows how these brothers not only influenced, but were also a system of support in each other's lives.  The author sheds light on the mental illnesses through the text, and shows readers how much this affected the main character.  The reader stands to learn so much history about who Van Gogh was as well as the challenges and tragedies he faced from reading this novel.  Although the story is tragic, readers can see a sense of love through the relationship of the siblings. This book would be suitable for high school grade students because it does talk about some adult graphic material.
