C. CRITICAL ANALYSIS( INCLUDING CULTURAL MARKERS)
Kadir Nelson vividly tells about Nelson Mandela’s struggle for peace, love, and freedom in this wonderfully written and illustrated book. Beginning with the simple cover with the drawing of Mandela’s face which shows that it only takes one man to start a revolution, to the vibrant drawings throughout the book, Nelson shows the people’s continuous struggle against oppression. It encourages the reader to not only be a part of the story, but also a participant in the numerous protests against the oppressor.
Nelson’s story not only tells of a person’s fight for freedom and equality, but also shows how one’s culture is affected by the actions, beliefs, and thoughts of others. The author emphasizes how African traditions that told stories of ancestors and their old ways were replaced by Europe’s culture of apartheid, or separation, of three groups: the Africans, the Indians, and the Eouropeans. Much like in the United States, the non-Europeans in South Africa were seen and treated poorly and in many cases not regarded as human beings. The South African people, however, still held their beliefs strongly and, guided by Mandela’s words and strong convictions, managed to overcome the tyranny and oppression and overthrow the reigning government and restore their old ways.
This inspirational true account of a historical event and icon is an excellent read for students aged 8 and up. The book will teach students courage, love, and freedom which are three important virtues that will help them become better citizens.
